Mother’s Day Crafty Gift Round Up

Mothers-day-pin2

I wanted to do this post so that I could get a head start on Mother’s Day but after seeing all these gorgeous ideas I can’t decide! I looked around a lot for the best DIY gifts, and let me tell you I am not into those gifts that take an entire Saturday creating and then get thrown away after a week of sitting on the kitchen counter. So most of the ones I’ve rounded up are easy to make, super cute, and won’t make you cry when Grandma or Mom decide to throw it away.

Here we go, Yay!!

Love this one from Make and Takes but I think I would forget about the pot and just make a big fun piper cleaner bouquet!

Housekeeping Will Never Be The Same Again!

The past couple of weeks I have adopted a new habit that will forever change my attitude toward house keeping! Seriously! I now look forward to folding laundry and cleaning the bathroom, and you’re probably like… say what? Let me tell you, the game changer is a little smart phone app called OverDrive.

It’s the best thing since the vacuum cleaner. It’s a free library book app that allows you to borrow eBooks and audiobooks and download them straight to your phone. FOR FREE! That’s right, NO MONEY NEED BE SPENT TO READ OR LISTEN TO BOOKS YOU LOVE.

IMG_6745

Here’s how to get started!

1. Get a library card.

2. Download the OverDrive App.

3. Add your library by clicking on “Add  a library.”

4, Sign in with your library card number and information.

5. Search in your library to find eBooks and Audiobooks.

7. Download the free Kindle App to be able to read eBooks. Audiobooks will upload straight to the OverDrive app and will show up in your “Bookshelf.”

So lately, I’ve been listening to audiobooks while doing house work. It has made my life so much happier. Whenever I used to think about folding laundry I would just feel mad and depressed and like my life was a dark pit of wrinkled, clean clothes, laughing at me as I pulled them from the pile to find that some are still wet.

The truth is, we homemakers spend an enormous amount of time doing laundry and other tasks that sometimes seem tedious, but since I’ve started listening to audiobooks while folding and whatnot, I really do look forward to it! It’s now changed from being “house work” time to “me” time. And I think we could all use a little more me time.

Monday is my usual laundry day (so that I can relax the rest of the week) and this Monday when my husband got home I told him about my awesome day and how I even finished the laundry before lunch and it wasn’t even that bad. And I’m actually just realizing this right now, that I had such a great laundry day most likely because I was listening to a great part of Pride and Prejudice while folding.

You have to try it out!

Even if you’re not a homemaker, if you have any part of your life that needs something better than Netflix or the radio playing in the background, put on a book! During your commute, crafting time, your workout, walks with kids, getting ready in the morning, there are so many times you can fit in a little listening to a good book.

It has for sure helped control my road rage on those days that I’m carting kids all over the place all day. Way better than the same five songs playing over and over on the radio.

Let me know what you think! And please give me any reading or audiobook recommendations you might have.

Our Moving Experience and Tips

We moved into our first house almost a year and a half ago. Crazy!! We are loving it so much and we are so happy with how everything has turned out. When we were looking for homes, we had just moved back to Arizona (our home state) after my husband graduated from BYU in Provo (yes, we’re mormon), and we were living with my parents. We had an 18-month-old son and a baby on the way. The point is that we had a crazy-but-probably-pretty-typical situation that we found ourselves in once we finally did find a home and were ready to move in.

TIPS FOR KIDS WITH KIDS TRANSITIONING FROM SCHOOL TO REAL LIFE

  1. Don’t feel weird if you have to live with someone while you find a place of your own or while you finish school. It is veeeerrry normal even if it’s not ideal.
  2. Going from living with your spouse and kids to living with relatives can be very hard. Be sure to spend quality time with your spouse and kids without others around. Don’t forget how to be yourselves. Even if that means seeming kind of rude by shutting yourselves up in your room for a couple of hours or going out to dinner without inviting anyone else. Do not compromise your new, little family relationships because of lack of personal space.
  3. If you do have to live with in-laws or your own parents, don’t waste your days being the guest. We were with my parents for 7 months and I wish I would have made myself a better schedule, helped with the house more, did more cooking, crafting or something. It is hard when you don’t have your own place to organize and create in, but there are still a lot of things you can be doing (speaking mostly to stay-at-home moms). I might need to do a whole separate post about this topic.
  4. When you finally move out be sure to give a proper thank you to whomever you were staying with. One idea is to get a bunch of household items that you may have used up while living there. My brother and sister-in-law did this for my husband’s parents after living with them for a few months. Cute right?

THE ACTUAL MOVE

  1. If you can, once you have found your place, seriously try to decide where you want everything to be put when you start moving things in. I thought, to make things easier for the movers, that I would have them put the miscellaneous boxes and stuff just anywhere or all in the front room so that I could sort it out myself. (I mean, we hadn’t seen our stuff for 7 months and I couldn’t quite remember how I packed everything.) Big mistake. Once I decided where everything went I couldn’t move anything big because I was a pregnant wimp at the time and my hubby was at work all day. Just have things put as close as possible to the spot that you want them to be while you have strong men helping you out.
  2. Designate someone to watch any kiddos you have during the move. And preferably away from the new home. Moving day can be dangerous.
  3. Do any serious painting or other projects before the big move. And ask people to help. I’m a big asker of help. (Thanks to all my peeps who helped us out. I won’t start naming names because we had so many people helping us I know I would forget someone.)
  4. Window coverings and shower curtains are very important to have for your first night in your new home. Don’t forget them!!
  5. We reeeeealllllly really really liked having our carpet AND tile cleaned before we moved in. A fresh start is the way to go, especially in the bathrooms.
  6. Take the time to deep clean the bathrooms and the kitchen, too. You just never know what previous owners have left behind. Get it all out before you move your own stuff in.

A Cuhrazy Fun Birthday Date!

Segway Tours are seriously the best way to see any city. And doing this Old Town Scottsdale tour was an awesome way to spend my husband’s birthday! It’s so easy to stick with the good ol’ dinner-and-a-movie routine when dating your spouse, but now and then you have to totally just surprise them with something neither of you have done before. Doing new things is sometimes risky or scary, but I feel that we are usually happy with how things turn out. Either you have a great time together and you learn new things about each other, or you have an absolutely terrible time and you learn new things about each other.

DCIM112GOPRO

For example, when we lived in Provo, Utah, after we were first married we decided to go to dinner on the 4th of July. We weren’t exactly sure where the restaurant was but we wanted to get going so we thought we would look it up on the way. Little did we know, that BYU’s Stadium of Fire 4th of July celebration brings so many people to tiny little Provo that it took us an hour to get five miles down the road. Apparently I hate getting stuck in traffic, so I was fuming the whole time, and poor hubby was trying to help me have a good time but I was determined to be mad. ANYWAY, it was a little on the disastrous side, but we learned that I do not like getting stuck in traffic, and also that I just need to suck it up sometimes and have fun anyway. Now we look back on that night with fondness.

The point is — Get out of your comfort zone! Just do it!

Overall, I would give Segway of Scottsdale a 10 out of 10! A lot of good things about this company.

A Happier Monday

Sunday night and Monday morning can be a little sad around our house. The weekend is always filled with laughter, projects, family outings, yummy food, game nights, date nights, relaxing, dancing, spiritual feasting, and happiness. Then Monday morning rolls around again and we’re just sad. If this is how it is for you, or even if it’s not, I’ve put together some of my family’s favorite things online to hopefully make your Monday a little more endurable and, as always, a little Happier.

Enjoy!

A feel-good high school basketball story.

Try to get a better score than me on this buzzfeed quiz. I got 8 our of 13. Very disappointed in myself. 😉

It’s all about family.

I don’t know what this music video is about but we love this song right now! My 3-year-old loves singing it.

Need a Harry Potter fix? Try this sporcle quiz.

If you have old bananas that didn’t get eaten from last week’s groceries, try this recipe. We made these a couple of weeks ago and they are awesome!

Jimmy Fallon makes me and my husband laugh so hard. Have you seen this episode with Nicole Kidman?

That’s all for today! Happy Monday!!

HELP! My kids want to play with me!

How many of you moms out there have kids who want to play with you… all day?! Don’t get me wrong, I understand the whole, “enjoy it while they’re young” business, and “they grow up so fast” thing, and I seriously do love playing with my kids! Seeing your own child grow and learn and having them make you laugh and think and grow yourself, is the absolute most rewarding thing in the entire world.

But lately my little three-year-old has started insisting that I play with him all day long for every second of the day. Even after we just got back from a fun outing together, or I’ve been playing with him for an hour, or there’s a movie on the TV, I can’t shake him!!

IMG_6279forweb

I guess what I’m getting at is that I am feeling so guilty during the times that I have to do the dishes, fold laundry, make dinner, or simply just sit and take a breath because he’s at my side with those big, blue eyes saying, “mom, I wan play wif you” or recently he’s switched it up and asks, “mom you wan’ play wih me?” but the best one is when he gives me a hug and says, “mom you cute” just because he knows I can’t resist it.

Do any of you have this same problem?

Do you ever feel mom guilt?

Sometimes I feel like a bad mom because I’m just all played out.

How much time do you spend playing with your little ones?

Please comment and let me know what you think!

P.S. Sorry this was kind of a downer post, but my hope is that you can come to my blog and know that I am being honest and real with you.

Our Favorite Spring Playdate

I just had to post a little something about our favorite spot so far this spring, the Down Town Gilbert Water Tower Splash Pad (wow long name).

IMG_6543

This little park gets four and a half stars in my book.

Lots of seating.

A fun grassy hill.

Yummy places to eat all around.

Great splash pad area with a great little water area that my little one-year-old loves.

My only teeny tiny complaint would be that there isn’t enough shade. For now it’s ok but when it gets really hot later in the summer it’s kind of not enough.

Here’s a tip for splash pad visits: Bring snacks and towels.

If you have little ones you should go here! You’re Welcome.

Piper’s Polyhedron Mobile

IMG_0817

This was such a fun project for me to do while waiting for our little girl to get here. All I had to do was buy the paper, print the template on the paper, cut, glue, and hang.

Ok so if I’m being honest the hanging part wasn’t totally easy peasy. But it all came together in the end. Isn’t it so cute? I love it. I don’t even know if Piper likes it, but I do.

This blog has the whole tutorial, so I’ll just send you over to them. ENJOY!
